Howe, William, Viscount

(1729-1814). Brother of George August us, Viscount Howe ( q.v. ), and Admiral Lord Howe. Commanded light infantry under Wolfe at Quebec, 1759. Succeeded Gage as commander-in-chief in America, 1775. Commanded forces at Bunker Hill. Defeated Washington at White Plains, 1776, and at Brandy wine, 1777. Recalled, 1778. Became governor of Berwick, and later of Plymouth.
