cumenylacrylic acid

Inorganic Chem.: Isopropyl-phenyl-acrylic acid. C12H14O2 or C6H4 CH=CHCOOH. Obtained by heating cumic aldehyde with sodium acetate and acetic anhydride. It is purified by repeated crys tall i zati on from alcohol. Cumenyl-acrylic acid, crystallized in white needles, melting at 158°, is soluble in alcohol and hot glacial acetic acid, but only slightly soluble in boiling water. When boiled it is decomposed into CO2 and isopropyl-cinna mene; oxidized with chromic acid mixture, it yields a distillate of cumic aldehyde. Nitric acts on it, forming nitro-substitution compounds.
