Metz

Fortified city of Lorraine, on the Moselle and Seille; besieged by Charles VII. of France 1444; taken by Henry II., April 10, 1552; defended against Charles V. and an army of 100,000 by the Duke of Guise, Oct. 31, 1552-Jan. 15, 1553. In the Franco-Pru ian war the chief French army was concentrated here Aug. 10 and 11, 1870; the emperor started for Paris, leaving Bazaine in command, Aug. 14; the battles of Courcelles, Mars-la-Tour, and Grave lotte occurred Aug. 14-18; the French were repulsed in sortie at Courcelles Aug. 26, and defeated Aug. 31 and Sept. 1; sorties were made Sept. 23, 24, 27, and Oct. 7.
