pl. [Gr. a, priv., and σφυρήλατος ( sphure latos ) = wrought with the hammer; σφύρα = ( sphura ) = a hammer.] An old designation for metals deemed immalleable. Under it were included bismuth, antimony, cobalt, zinc, and mercury. as-phyx-i-a (Modern Latin ), as-phyx'-ў (Eng.), s. [In Fr. asphyxie; Mod. Lat. asphyxia; Gr. ἀσφυξία ( asphuxia ) = a stopping of the pulse; σφύξις ( sphuxis ) = the pulse; σφύζω (sphuzo), fut. σφύξω (sphuzo) = to throb.] 1. Originally : Syncope, fainting.
