ULRICH VON (14881523), Ger. humanist and reformer; first trained as monk, but left in disgust; from 1504-15 wandered about Germany and Italy; author (in part) of famous Papacy and quarrelled with Erasmus, but was received by Zwingli; a pa ionately sincere reformer, but a man of ‘di olute life, headstrong, and lacking in self-control; wrote much in Latin and German. BEng. mathematician, taught at New- ‘castle till 1773; then prof. of Mathematics at Woolwich. Pub. Mathematical Tables,1785, Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary, 1795-96; Course of Mathematics, 1798 and 1811. geologist; ed.
