(vahs, or vauz.) [From L. va sum, a hollow ve el.] (Arch.) A term applied, in its widest signification, to all ve els adapted either for ornament or use. It is generally used in this sense with reference to ancient art; in connection with modern art, it is restricted to ve els of an ornamental kind. [s. 930]
