Indexing

With increase of knowledge and books the need of good indexes becomes constantly greater. Their subjects are arranged in alphabetical or chronological order. The Index Society was formed in England in 1877 for the purpose of preparing indexes for old books and for special subjects in various books. Heinsius' and Kayser's are standard indexes of German books. Poole's index (1848) of current literature was the first of its kind in America; its third and most complete edition was i ued in 1882. Since then additional volumes have kept the work up to date. The best index of scientific literature is the Index of Scientific Papers published by the Royal Society of England, although similar works devoted to special subjects are almost innumerable.
