South wark

a borough in Surry, which may be considered as part of the metropolis,. being seated on the opposite side of the Thames, and under the jurisdiction of the corporation of London, who have an officer here called the bailiff of Southwark. It is called the Borough, by way of distinction, and is a populous place, participating considerably in the commerce of London. It sends two members to parliament. It contains six churches, a Roman catholic chapel, many places of worship for di enters, and several charitable foundations, particularly, St. Thomas’s Hospital, Guy’s Hospital, and the Magdalen Hospital; also the King’s Bench and Marshalsea prisons, and a county gaol, See Lonpon.
