[s. 677] : Dr. Scudder was Scotlana Scndner, Jolin, Jr., M.D. the son of the famous pioneer mi ionary. Rev. John Scudder, M.D., and was born on the Island of Ceylon, February 5, 1822. After graduating at New York University in 1840 and Union Seminary in 1843, he was appointed mi,?sionary of the ABCFM, and embarked, with his wife, for Madras, India, May 6, 1844. The Mi ionary Herald stated at the time that “this is the first instance in which the son of a mi ionar}’ has been sent forth as a preacher to the heathen.” He was connected with the Madras Mi ion till 1851, when, after his exploration of the Arcot district, he was a igned to work there, his medical skill giving him facility of acce to the people. The Arcot Mi ion was detached from the Madras Mi ion in 1853, and was carried on wholly by the Scudder family, consisting of five brothers and their wives and one sister. In 1857 this mi ion was transferred to the Board of the Reformed Dutch Church. In 1864 Dr. Scudder returned to America, and was pastor of prominent churches in San Francisco, Brooklyn, and Chicago. In 1887 he joined his son and daughter in Japan and here he rendered excellent service for three years. He died at Winchester, Ma ., June 4, 1895. He was a man of great abilities, of fine addre , and of commanding power in the pulpit. 677
