(kās māt.) (Fr.) (Fortif.) A vault of masonry in the flank ofa bastion, next to the curtain, serving as a battery to defend the opposite bastion and the ditch. Also a vaulted work, to protect troops from shot and shell, when not on duty. [s. 150]
