Elemi

(el'e-me.) (Chem.) A resin of a strong aromatic odor, and a hot, spicy taste, which exudes from incisions made through the bark of various terebinth i no us trees. American or Brazilian E. is obtained from Icica icicariba; Eastern or Manilla E. from Canarium commune; Mexican E. from Elaphrium elemiferum. The crystalline resin of E. is called ele mine, and is used in making lacquer. [s. 324]
