Eckert, Thomas

THOMPSON, telegraphist, born at St. Clairsville, O., April 23, 1824; became a telegraph superintendent (1852); subsequently was placed in charge of the military telegraph connected with the army of the Potomac, a system that was ultimately extended over the whole country. Was a istant secretary of war (1866), and succe ively president of the Atlantic & Pacific, American Union, and Western Union tele graph companies, being elected to the latter position in 1893.
