Horn

The hard projection, used as a defensive weapon, growing on the heads of certain animals. Horns may be permanent, as in the ox; or deciduous, as in the deer. Also, the hardened epithelial substance of which the horn is composed. H., Cutaneous. See Cornu cutaneum. H. -blende, a common mineral, occurring ma ive or in prismatic crystals, of various colors, from white, through green shades, to black. It is a silicate of lime, magnesia, or iron. It is sometimes used in the manufacture of porcelain teeth for shading the body or enamel. H.distemper, a disease of cattle affecting the core of the horn. H.-pock. See Warty Smallpox. H.-pox, a variety of varicella in which the lesions resemble papules. See also Warty Smallpox.
