Chief commercial city of Belgium, on r. bank of R. Scheldt, 50 m. from the sea. It appears in history 517, and was a republic in 11th century. Here Alva built a memorable citadel, whence i ued "the Spanish Fury,” Nov. 4, 1576. A. was taken, after a famous 14 months' siege, by Farnese 1585.
