(Lat.), n. m. pl.?n(ka$n)-thi- (the)ni(ne). From a priv.. and äxav@a, a spine. Fr., acanthins, acanthin i ens. A suborder of teleostean fishes, including the cod, distinguished by the following characters: the fins have no spiny rays, and the ventral fins, when present, are beneath or in front of the pectorals; there is no duct between the swimming-bladder and the œsophagus.
