Carbon Dioxide

Liquid carbon dioxide is manufactured in large quantities for use as a fire extinguisher and in soda water fountains. The gas is the principal constituent of the mixture of gases known as choke damp or after damp. It occurs free in the atmosphere and in combination in the carbonates, and is formed whenever any substance containing carbon is burned in a sufficient supply of air, by the breathing of animals, and by the slow decomposition of organic matter. It i ues from the earth in many places. In the laboratory it is made by treating a carbonate with an acid. It is soluble in water, is not poisonous, but will not support life or combustion. It was discovered by Black 1757.
