Sulphid

(sul' -fid). A direct compound of sulphur with an element or radicle. It may be considered a salt of hydrogen sulphid. The alkaline sulphids are soluble in water, the others are generally insoluble. S., Hydrogen, unof., a gas having the odor of rotten eggs; highly poisonous. It is used as a precipitant for certain metals in solution; it has also been used in the treatment of tuberculosis. Sulphidum, Calcii, unof., the " hepar sulphur is " of homeopathy, used mainly in the preparation of other compounds. Locally, a specific for itch.
