They feed on insects and seeds of pine cones. Of true nuthatches we have the genus Sitta , bluish-gray above and white or reddish (according to species) below. They resemble the woodpecker, but lack the stiff tail feathers. The nuts on which they feed are hatched or cut open in clefts of trees by their bills. See TENUIROSTRES. The terminology of the game is Ural-Altaic, and it is clearly a foreign introduction into e. Asia. It is identical in almost every particular with a game common to many tribes of the American Indians and played upon a similar diagram according to throws with staves.
