Revel

or Reval . A strongly fortified seaport town of Ru ia, government of Esthonia, on a small bay on the south side of the Gulf of Finland, 200 miles west-southwest from St. Petersburg. It was long held by the Teutonic Knights; was made over to Sweden in 1562; bombarded by the Danish and Lübeck fleets in 1569; besieged by Peter the Great, and annexed to the Ru ian empire in 1710. In 1713 a naval harbor, in addition to the commercial harbor, was founded.
