Anne of Denmark, 1574-1612

Wife of James I. of Eng. land 1589. Annealing. Operation of heating, followed by retarded cooling, by which steel and gla are rendered le brittle. It has been found in steel that local heating in the proce of fabrication causes molecular strains in the structure of the piece; also that severe mechanical treatment, such as punching and shearing, has a tendency to send the carbon into the combined state with the metal at the affected edges. The heating and slow cooling di ipate the local strains from the first set of causes, restore the softne , and lower the elastic limit, which have been effected by the second causes. An annealed structural piece is not under initial strain before being placed to withstand a proportion of working strain in service.
