History.— Delaware was named after Lord De la Ware, a of Virginia, who sailed up the bay in 1610. The first settlement was made by the Dutch in 1631, and in 1638 a colony of Swedes and Finns built a fort on Christian a creek and called the country New Sweden. It has a course of about 300 miles, and is navigable for large ve els to Philadelphia, and for smaller craft to the head of tide-water at Trenton (155 miles).
