pl. [Mod. Lat. pelag ( ia ); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -ide.] Zool .: An order of Lucern arid a. They have only one polypite, and an umbrella with marginal tontacles. It contains the reproductive elements. pěl-a-ģīte, s. [Latin pelag ( us )=the sea; suff. -ite (Min.).] Min.: A name suggested by Church for the manganese nodules dredged from a depth of 2,740 fathoms over a considerable area in the Pacific Ocean, in case they should, on further investigation, be accepted as a distinct mineral species. Structure concretionary, consisting of concentric layers, mostly po e ing a nucleus of hard red clay, but in one case of pumice. Analyses showed a considerable variation in composition, but they appear to consist principally of binoxide of manganese, sesquioxide of iron, silica, and water. pě-la-gō-ně-mer-ti-dæ, s . pl . [Modern Latin pelagonemert( es ); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -idœ .] Zool .: A group of Nemerteans, living in the ocean. Body broad, gelatinous, and flattened. A fatty acid occurring in the volatile oil of Pelar gonium roseum , and readily prepared by distilling choloidic or oleic acid with nitric acid. It is a colorle oil, solid below 12, boils at 254, is slightly soluble in water, but very soluble in alco. hol and ether, and becomes yellow by keeping. The ammonium, pota ium, and sodium salts are crystalline and soluble. Barium pelargonate, C18H34Ba O4, forms white scales, hay having a pearly luster, slightly soluble in cold, very soluble in hot water, insoluble in alcohol. pelargonic-anhydride, s. Chemistry: C18H34O3=(C8H17.CO)2O. Pelargonic pelargonate. Obtained by the action of phosphorus oxy chloride on barium pelargonate.
