EPIDERMIS

(Yunanca köken — orijinale bakınız.) In Anatomy, the cuticle or scarf skin. It is an albuminous membrane. Epidermis. In Botany, the cellular integument, or the exterior cellular coating of the bark, or leaf, or stem of a plant. It is composed of cells compacted together into a stratum, varying in thickne in different species, and is often readily separable by gentle violence. It is believed to be intended by nature as a protection of the subjacent parts from the drying effects of the atmosphere. [s. 423]
