Ehrenbreitstein

(ā´ren-brīt-stīn), a dismantled Pru ian fortre formerly of great strength and situated opposite the confluence of the Moselle with the Rhine, on a precipitous rock 387 feet above the river, and inacce ible on three sides. It is connected with Coblentz on the opposite shore by a bridge of boats. The fortifications, which were erected between 1816 and 1820 at a cost of £1,200,000, could accommodate a garrison of 14,000 men, and po e ed room for stores to last an army of 60,000 for a year.
