WARD

In Feudal Law, the heir of the king's tenant in capite during his nonage was so called; and, in general language, all infants under the power of guardians. {See Guardian). The court of wards and liveries, for cognisance of various matters relating to the king's prerogative, was established by Henry VIII., and abolished at the Restoration. (See Archceolcgia, vol. ii.)
