Ship'-money

(-mün'e.) (Eng. Hist.) An auc. impost charged upon the boroughs, cities, and counties of the kingdom, for the furnishing of ships for the royal service. The attempted revival of this tax by Charles I., in 1634, was one of the chief causes which precipitated the Civil War and the king's downfall. [s. 322]
