Oblation

(ob-la's hun.) [Same der iv.] (Eccl.) A sacrificial offering made to God, which, according to the canon law, is defined to be anything offered by pious Christians to the Almighty and the Church, whether movables or immovables. Till the 4th cent., the Church had no fixed revenues, the clergy altogether subsisting on voluntary oblations. [s. 657]
