VETERAN

(Lat. vet us, o/d.) Among the Romans, a soldier who had pa ed the legal age of military service, which extended from seventeen to forty-six, was termed veteran us; or, in the later times of the republic, one who had served a requisite number of campaigns, generally twenty-five. [s. 1306]
