Hawthorne, NATHANIEL

1804-1864. Foremost of American novelists. He lived at Concord, Ma ., 1843-46 and 186064; Salem, his birthplace, as surveyor of the port, 1846-50; Lenox 1850-52; U. S. Consul at Liverpool 1853-57; then in Italy and France till 1860. His first book, Fanshawe, 1826, won no attention. Twice told Tales, 1837-45, and Mo es from an Old Manse, 1846, were more succe ful, and The Scarlet Letter. IMG:content-0515.jpg:[graphic][merged small] 1850, revealed his genius at its height. In 1851 appeared The House of Seven Gables , True Stories , and The Wonder - book ; in 1852 The Blithe dale Romance , Snow Image , and Life of Pierce. The Marble Faun , 1860, was written in Italy; Our Old Home , 1863, referred to England. His English , French , and Italian Note - Books , 1868-72, were edited by his wife, SOPHIA (Peabody), 1810-1871. Other posthumous works were Septimius Felton , 1872, and two fragmentary romances.
