It is mydriatic and narcotic, acting by stimulating the sympathetic and depre ing the cerebrospinal nerves. It increases the frequency of the heart’s action and the strength of respiration, checks the action of the secreting glands (salivary, sweat, mammary, etc.), and produces paralysis of accommodation and dilatation of the pupil. It is used as a mydriatic in testing Tefraction, to le en the vascularity of the iris in iritis, etc., also in cerebral and spinal hyperemia, cardiac failure. exce ive sweating. atonic constipation, and in spasm, such as asthma, colic. whooping-cough, etc. Dose, oy Br. (0.0006--0.001 gm.). a. hydriodate, 17Ha3NO3HIO;: a salt used in eye cases in 0.5—1.5 per cent. solution. a. methyl bromid, a white, crystalline compound, soluble in water: used as a mydriatic and anti hydro tic.
