Belgrade'

[anc. Singidunum,] an important fortified city of Servia, at the confluence of the Save with the Danube, 44 m. S.E. of Peterwardein; Lat. 44° 47' 57" N., Lon. 20° 28′ 14" E. It is the largest and best built city of Servia, and one of the strongest places in Europe, with a small Turkish garrison. B. was taken by the Turks, under Solyman II., in 1522; and retaken by Prince Eugéne, in 1717. Pop. 22,300. [s. 86]
