Gray, George

statesman, born at Newcastle, Del., May 4, 1840; graduated from Princeton College (1859), studied law at Harvard, and was admitted to the bar (1863); opening an office in New Castle, he continued there till 1879, when he was appointed Attorney-General of Delaware, and removed to Wilmington; he held this position until 1885. Was a delegate to the National Democratic Conventions of 1876, 1880, and 1884; and was elected U. S. Senator in 1885 to fill the vacancy made by appointing Thomas F. Bayard, Secretary of State. He took his seat March 19, 1885; was elected for the full term in January, 1887, and reëlected in 1893. He is a prominent Democratic leader.
