catarrh (kat-ahr')

A simple inflammation of any mucous membrane, attended by a discharge of mucus or mucopus. A chronic nasal c. in which, from lo of the glands or interference with their function by pre ure of the enlarged stroma, dryne and atrophy of the membrane are caused, autumnal c. A "cold in the chest"; an edematous and infiltrated condition of the mucous membrane of more or fewer of the bronchial tubes, with increased mucous secretion which subsequently becomes more or le purulent, gastric c. Catarrhal inflammation of the stomach, hemorrhagic c. C. with exudation of blood along with the other secretions; seen in smallpox, erysipelas, and pyemia, hyperplastic nasopharyngeal c,hypertrophic nasal c.
