Choke-damp

the name given by miners to the fire-damp resulting from an explosion of gas in mines., Choking, the effect caused by a morsel of food, liquid, or other obstruction, pa ing into the larnyx or upper opening of the a instead of the gullett. It results generally from a breath being suddenly drawn in coughing or laughing, while food or fluid is in the mouth; and a violent fit of coughing follows till the offending substance is expelled from the windpipe.
