Flaxman

JOHN, (flaks'man,) an English sculptor, B. in York, 1755, became in 1810 profe or of his art in the Royal Academy. His sublime cla ical compositions in outline elicited from Canova the dictum that F. was " the greatest sculptor of modern times." Among his chief productions are the famous Shield of Achilles, and the group of The Archangel Michael and Satan. D. 1826. [s. 369]
