CONGESTION

denotes an exce of blood in any given area. The condition may be due to some obstruction to the circulation in the large veins that carry off the blood from the part. This variety of congestion is pa ive congestion. It occurs from heart disease, varicose veins, etc. On the other hand the congestion ar due to an increased supply of blood to the part. is variety is active congestion. It occurs usually as the first stage of inflammation, and is due to the presence of some irritant, e.g., @ chemical, like turpentine, or a germ. [Refer to Inflammation.] [s. 345]
