COLOUR

(Lat. color.) In Painting, that quality of a body which affects our sensation in regard to its hue. Local colours are those which are natural to a particular object in a picture, and by which it is distinguished from other objects. Neutral colours are those in which the hue is broken by partaking of the reflected colours of the objects which surround them. Positive colours are those unbroken by such accidents as affect neutral colours. [s. 264]
