(a ˙ n ˙ -sē-yōn ˙ ), Jean Pierre Frédéric, an author and statesman of French extraction, born at Berlin in 1767 (where his father was pastor of the French reformed church); died there in 1837. He became profe or of history in the military academy at Berlin, and in 1806 he was charged with the education of the crown-prince. He succe ively occupied several important offices of state, being at last appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. He wrote on philosophy, history, and politics, partly in French, partly in German.
