velocipede (velosiped)

Later, treadles operating cranks on the axle of the front wheel came into use, and many modified and improved kinds have become popular under the name of bicycle. (See also tricycle.) Light boats driven by a paddle-wheel or wheels operated by cranks and treadles, and known as water - velocipedes, have also been brought into use.
