Internal Revenue

The receipts from internal revenue steadily rose during the period from 1791 to 1801, reaching $1,000,000 in the latter year. They then declined to almost nothing. In the War of 1812 they rose again, reaching $5,000,000 in 1816; and again declined to nothing in 1849 and the subsequent years to 1862. Under the new system then inaugurated they rose to $309,000,000 in 1866, and have been above $100,000,000 in every year since ($154,000,000 in 1892). By the imposition of taxes to meet the expenses of the war with Spain the receipts from internal revenue for 1900 were $295,316,107.
