Ph.D. (Princeton, 1866), D.D. (Princeton, 1870), Presbyterian; b. in Manchester, Vt., Oct. 30, 1827; graduated at Dart mouth College, 1846; taught th 16 ree years in the Lawrence Academy, Groton, Ma ., and in Phillips Academy, And over; entered the And over Theological Seminary, graduated 1853, having meanwhile studied at the universities of Halle and Berlin (1851-53). He became succe ively pastor of the Congregational Church at Yarmouth, Me., 1854; profe or of Latin in Dart mouth College, 1859; the same in the College of New Jersey at Princeton, 1866; president of Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., 1869; Archibald Alexander profe or of Christian ethics and apologetics in Princeton Theological Seminary, 1871; and since 1882, Archibald Alexander profe or of Oriental and Old-Testament literature in the same institution. He was a member of the Old-Testament Revision Company. He translated Zdckler's commentary on Proverbs in the Lange series, New York, 1869; and has contributed to the Presbyterian and other reviews, etc.
