tost, v. To name when a health drunk; to drink to the health of, or in honor of. — n. A lady in honor of whom persons are invited to drink; the name of any person, esp. a person of distinction, in honor of whom health drunk: anything considered worthy to be commemorated in a similar way; a sentiment. [Perh. fr. the piece of to a steil bread formerly put into a gla of liquor; perh. a corrupt, — of the G. drinking cry sto an knock (gla es).] Toaat'-mas'ter, n. One who, at public dinners, announces the toasts, and directs or times the cheering.
