Fifth

One of the five equal parts into which any unit may be divided. (Mus.) A distance comprising four diatonic intervals, that is, three tones and a half. It is the second of the consonances in the order of their generation. As consecutive fifths do not produce a good effect, they are not allowable in harmony. There are three kinds of fifths: viz., the perfect fifth (C-G), consisting of three whole tones and a semitone; the flat, diminished, or imperfect fifth (B-F), consisting of two whole tones and two semitones; and the extreme sharp, or superfluous fifth (C-G sharp), composed of four whole tones.
