Naphtol

or Alpha-naphtol (naf/-tol), A substance that results from a-naphthyl am in by means of the diazo-compound. It is soluble with difficulty in hot water, readily in alcohol and ether, erystallizes in shining needles, and has the odor of phenol. It melts at 950 C., and boils at C. It is used in the preparation of alphaoxynaphtoic acid. N., /3-, or Beta-naphtol, is formed from It is readily soluble in hot water: it crystallizes in leaflets, melting at 1220 C, and boiling at 2860 C. N.-blue. See Pigments, Conspectus of. N. -camphor, a mixture of J-naphtol one part, with camphor two parts. It is antiseptic, and is used in diphtheria and pulmonary tuberculosis. Unof. N. -green, N. -violet, N.yellow.
