Nova Scotia

Province of Canada. It consists of a peninsula connected with New Brunswick by a narrow isthmus, and the adjoining island of Cape Breton. Area 20,907 sq. m. It is intersected by ranges of hills, running n.e. and s.w., parallel to the coast-line. The coast is rocky, broken, and covered with forests. The leading industries are manufacture of timber, agriculture, fishing, shipbuilding, and coal-mining. N. S. was visited by the Cabots 1497, colonized 1604 by the French, and called Acadia. Its po e ion was hotly contested by the English. In 1667 it was ceded to France, and to Gt.
