REFUGEE

A name which has been given in history and political phraseology indiscriminately to persons who flee from religious or political persecution in their own country, and take refuge in another. It was originally applied to the French Protestants (refugies) who found an asylum in this country, and among various Continental nations, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV.
