Electrotype

Facsimile of a medal or engraved plate, obtained by means of the electrolytic deposition of copper or silver upon a mold rendered a conductor by means of graphite. The first succe ful experiments were made 1839 by Jacobi at St. Petersburg. Among the commonest applications of the art are the production of copies of woodeuts and of printed pages set in type. These copies are much more durable than the originals originals and many electrotypes may be taken from them without injury. Each electrotype is capable of producing about 100,000 impre ions.
