Leading features of his adMinistration were: the struggle against trusts; mediation in the Ru o-Japanese War, the restoration of order in Cuba; construction of the Panama Canal, and the preservation of public lands from land-sharks and despoilers. He selected William Howard Taft to succeed him in the presidency in 1908, and after the former’s election went on a bunting expedition to East Africa. Taft's administration disappointed his party and Roosevelt, in 1912 was persuaded by his friends to seek the nomination for president.
