BORATE

n. Bo’rat. Lat., boras. Fr., borate. Ger., Borat, borsaures Salz. It.,Sp., bora to. A salt of boric acid. The term is often applied to the salts of meta boric and pyroboric acids, which should be called meta borates and yrCbor ates: The b’s are unstable, and their characters are but little known. The general formula of the b’s proper (orthoborates) is R°”(BOg), or R’(BOg)2, in which R’” and R” may represent one or more radicles having collectively a trivalent and a bivalent combining power; and these radicles may also be in part replaced by hydrogen.
