(Lat. alb us, white),ecclesiastical vestment, reaching to feet, worn spec i at celebrations of Eucharist; generally of white linen, and in Middle Ages often embroidered, but now in Rom. Church generally plain (except in religious orders); revived in England by ritual movement, and worn under chasuble' by celebrating priest, and sometimes by lay servers.
